It is generally believed that most pointers
and spaniels came from Spain and arrived in England through France. Brittany has always
been a favorite hunting area for English sportsmen. Some historians relate that the
Brittany arrived from the British Isles with the Irish who invaded Gaul now France.
The first ancestors of the breed were bred in the Douron Valley in France.
The Brittany developed into a superb hunting dog and is the only pointing spaniel. The
breed was imported to America in 1931 and has proved to be capable gun dogs and
retrievers. Their small size and short coat make them excellent housedogs. The American
Brittany Club was founded in 1942.
