The overall
impression of the ideal Burmese would be a cat of medium size and rich solid color, with
substantial bone structure, good muscular development, and a surprising weight for its
size. This, together with its expressive eyes and sweet face, presents a totally
distinctive cat that is comparable to no other breed. The story of the Burmese begins in 1930 with a
cat by the name of Wong Mau. Dr. Joseph C. Thompson brought Wong Mau to California from
India.
Although there is no certainty that
this elegant breed actually originated in Burma, the breed carries the Burmese title. The
United Burmese Cat Fanciers came into existence in 1958, as a result of a merger of the
Burmese Cat Society of the East and the Burmese Breeders of America. This organization has
maintained a single standard recognized by all major Cat Fancier Associations.
The Burmese is a combination of beauty,
intelligence, dignity, and affection.
