The
Family Coat of Arms
Sometime during the twelfth century the
concept of heraldry came into prominent use. Knights began to have their shields and other
equipment decorated with marks of identification. These marks and colors evolved into a
way to identify the bearer as a member of a certain family, clan, or allegiance to a
feudal lord.
The lords, and their
knights and all their followers displayed the lord's coat of arms on pennants, shields,
and battle dress. Families and clans of families were identified by these symbols.
Such personal signs
sprang up all over Europe. As time passed, the rules of developing these identification
symbols became solidified and the art of heraldry became a science as well as an art.

Today many families display their own coat of arms. Searching for a family's coat of arms
has been ... and still is ... a significant part of genealogy for families all over the
world.How does heraldry fit
with my pet?
Monsieur Guilbert, an
artist and animal lover, began researching the history of pure-bred animals. He struck
upon the idea of developing coats of arms for animals following the rules of heraldry.
He named and registered
these works of art as Pet Crests. Pet Crests follow the rigorous design of medieval coats
of arms. Each Pet Crest depicts, in beautiful watercolor, historical imagery of the
breed's past. Nationally known breeders have worked with Monsieur Lucien Guilbert to
design these elegant works of art for you to proudly display and show friends. |
